CHER
Cher - Side Chair
MATERIAL | Poured Concrete / Oil Finished Walnut
YEAR | 2025
Born from an iterative series of side tables, Cher represents simplicity in form and geometric repetition. This piece was brought through a variety of material studies. The plywood version of the Cher Side Chair gave the piece a more natural and primitive feel. The introduction of concrete shifted the focus of the project from aesthetic design into an engineering puzzle. The concrete form was built using melamine pieces to create the leg shape in the negative space of the form. Rebar pieces were cut and bent to the exact shape of the concrete mold. The rebar pieces pierce through the walnut where the wood meets the concrete in order to ensure rigidity of the piece as a whole.
Looking back on the set of designs that led to the final Cher design, you are able to see a clear design element that connects these pieces. The element of shape creates a pure form that inspires balance and harmony. While this is overall a simple form, the process behind the final object is far from simple.
